The audio reader was wonderful and the story was riveting. Reacher wanders into the turbelent lives of a number of lifetime residents and finds himself in a life and death struggle to find meaning and salvation for his lonely wandering lifestyle. The book is very good at capturing the essence of small town America. There are the simple loving long time residents, corrupt politicians, good and bad cops as well as all kinds of colorful personalities living their lives in a small corner of America. He uses the skills he learned while in the military to survive the excesses of organized crime and come to terms with his relationship with his murdered brother.
It never disappoints. I've since read all of Lee Child's books but I think this is still my favorite. Even though sometimes it seems he gets out of situations that no other human could possibly survive, I still like the character and enjoy the books. The Killing Floor is definitely a page turner.I liked the character, the action, and the ending that surprised me.I always look forard to the next book in the Jack Reacher series. I purchased this book years ago only because I had finished my book and had a long plane ride in front of me. I was incredibly wowed by this book - I am glad I had finished that other book.I instantly adored the Jack Reacher character. This is a fast-paced thriller that starts off with immediate action on page 1, as in most of Child's novels.
Hey, it might be corny and full of cliches but during these politically correct times, I LOVE IT. As usual, an action packed good guys beat bad guys story. More more more.
And that's Jack Reacher who does not try to subvert or trick the system with false IDs and such. No family, no friends, no entanglements, no regrets - a strong, self-reliant character who floats on the surface, diving deeper only when he feels an injustice has been done.
Who says sociopaths aren't entertaining. I find it a guilty pleasure and enjoy watching Reacher get himself into and out of difficult circumstances, trying to make things right.
The premise is strained, no doubt, but the writing is just good enough to make it readable. If you don't much care for Bond, Reacher won't please you much either, for Reacher is the crude American cousin to Bond.
OK, so Lee Child isn't exactly Tolstoy or Dickens, and his hero is a misanthropic thug, but who hasn't daydreamed about being a non-person, wandering about using wits, wiles, and fists to right injustices and settle scores. He takes the bus, pays cash, buys new clothing when the old stuff wears out.
So, yep, most of the one- and two-star reviewers are correct, but then they probably think James Bond is not entertaining.
After being bit by the bug, so to speak, I came back to the start and am proceeding to go through them all. I started the Jack Reacher series somewhere near the end. Lee Child has really got a good character going with "Reacher".
